Dr. Melvin Owens

The Rev. Dr. Melvin Owens serves as Pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in LaFayette, Alabama. He is married to the former Deborah Lynne Bell, and together they are the proud parents of one son, Kelvin Brian Owens, and daughter-in-love, April. Dr. Owens is a graduate of Faulkner University, the University of Alabama, and Andersonville Theological Seminary, and he has furthered his studies at Selma University.

For more than four decades, Dr. Owens has faithfully united scholarship, stewardship, and a servant’s heart in proclaiming the Word of God. Renowned for his insightful and inspiring preaching and teaching, he views proclamation as a divine instrument through which God transforms hearts, minds, and souls. His unique gift lies in bringing Scripture to life—making biblical truth plain, practical, and pertinent to everyday living—while challenging believers to grow in maturity as disciples of Christ.

Dr. Owens’ ministry extends well beyond the pulpit. Through both preaching and personal engagement, he consistently encourages others to reach higher, strive harder, and embrace the fullness of their God-given potential. His scholarly yet approachable style reflects his intentional commitment to being right, relevant, and reachable. As a preacher, pastor, teacher, and servant leader, he embodies a warm and welcoming spirit that seeks to enlist, equip, and encourage all people, regardless of status or station.

He currently serves as Vice President-at-Large of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., and as President of the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention, Inc. He is also a Board Member of the Conference of National Black Churches, a member of 100 Black Men of Greater Auburn-Opelika, and a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Owens remains steadfast in his commitment to serving this present age while seeking to do his Master’s will—continually inspiring and equipping others to glorify God through faithful living and dedicated service.
