Varick On 7th — Faith-Anchored Affordable Housing
105 Units Delivered | Affordable & Market-Rate | Land Donated by Church CDC | Wraparound Services Included
A 105-unit mixed-use affordable housing development, built on church-donated land, is now open and serving working families, seniors, and residents with disabilities in one of Charlotte's most rapidly gentrifying corridors.
Led by Rev. Dr. Dwayne A. Walker of Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church, Varick On 7th was developed in partnership with Laurel Street Residential and the City of Charlotte, with the church's community development corporation contributing the land. Named after the first Bishop of the AME Zion Church, the development delivers both affordable and market-rate units alongside wraparound resident services — directly addressing a county-wide shortage of more than 26,000 affordable housing units. Residents began moving in April 2024.
This project demonstrates how asset-rich faith institutions can leverage land holdings as a catalyst for scalable, community-centered development — strengthening both the neighborhood and the congregation's long-term ministry impact.
Sacred land, activated for community impact.
